Saigon Visit

The United States Vice- ; President, Mr Hubert Hum- ] phrey, arrived today in Saigon for a direct follow-up to the Honolulu conference between the United States and South Vietnam, the Associated Press reported. The Vice-President’s plane landed at 5.04 p.m. local time. Also flying from Honolulu were South Vietnam’s Prime Minister. Nguyen Cao Ky, and Chief of State, Nguyen Van i Thieu. who met in Hawaii j with President Johnson. I Mr Humphrey did not attend the Honolulu conferI ence, but came to Saigon on I the President’s request to ' carry on the work set in motion there. Official announcements said Mr Humphrey’s brief visit would concentrate on economic, political and social questions, but there was no doubt that while here he also would be taking a first-hand look at the military situation. He will later visit Australia and New Zealand. In an arrival statement, Mr Humphrey said: “The United States is too strong to be afraid and too determined to be defeated.” He also said: “There can be no doubt of our ultimate success in achieving our common purpose.”
