Waiting List For ‘Gigi’ Gala Night
As a special production to aid its hall fund, the Elmwood Players will produce the play “Gigi,” in the Elmwood Playhouse, Fulton avenue for a season of six performances, opening on February 26. The gala opening night has already been fully booked, and a waiting list is being formed to provide for possible cancellations. The play, “Gigi” was adapted by Colette and Anita Loos from Colette's novelette of the same name, first published in 1944. It was first performed in English in London in 1956 with Leslie Caron in the title role, and Tony Britton, known in New Zealand through his appearance aa Guy Foster in the
television series, “Melissa,” as Gaston. The play was turned into a screen musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, creators of “My Fair Lady.” It featured Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdain, with a notable supporting cast including Hermione Gingold, Maurice Chevalier, and Isobel Jeans. In Hunter Bell's production for the Elmwood Players the title role will be played by Judy Scollay, with Robert Russell as Gaston. Audrea Beddie will appear as Mrs Alvarez, Gigi’s grandmother, with Muriel Greenwood as great-aunt Alicia, and Natalie Brittenden as Andree, Gigi’s mother. Other parts are taken by Helen Browning and Stan Cunningham
