O’Hagan Sprints To Title

A storming finish from the back of the field by A. O’Hagan was the outstanding individual performance at last evening’s Canterbury cash cycling championships. The championships were held in conjunction with the normal weekly track cycling meeting. O’Hagan, who also won the one mile, was second-to-last at the bell when a tiring R. Campion led by a vast margin. The field rapidly hauled in Campion but O’Hagan had nicely calculated his finish and timed his run to perfection. He won by about a yard. The two miles pursuit, for the first and second placings, had the appearance of an overwhelming win for B Yaxley, who held a lead of several yards over G. Moore for much of the race. But Moore turned on a paralysing last lap to finish .Isec behind Yaxley. The 500 metres sprints series were won well by K. Jeffery, who finished with something in hand in both races against F. Hooper. The amateur individual pursuit between A. Hood, a former provincial junior champion, and the New Zealand

I road representative, S. Stepihen, was a gripping affair. 1 Hood established a comfortable early lead but Stephen pegged him back and even took the lead briefly in the middle stages. The two kept almost dead even for the remainder of the race with Hood inching ahead over the last lap. J. Cleary, who recorded an outstanding 25.65ec a few weeks ago, made an attempt on the New Zealand record of 25.55ec in the flying quartermile. However, conditions were not entirely in his favour and Cleary had to be content with 26sec. Results: CASH CHAMPIONSHIPS Two Miles Pursuit.—B. Yaxlev, 4:35.4, 1; G. Moore, 4:35.5, 2; J.
