HAMMOND GOING?
It is to be hoped that R. D. Hammond will not follow in the footsteps of the New Zealand Rugby League players who have announced their retirements recently. Practically all have left these shores to seek the rich monetary rewards that can be gained as playercoaches in Australia. Since 1960 J. R. Butterfield, R. C. Ackland, G. Menzies, M. L. Cooke, T. T. Kllkelly, R. W. Percy, and, just recently, R. S. Cooke have been : granted clearances to Australia. It is known that G. M. Kennedy, G. R. Bailey and W. L. Snowden will apply this year. If a player of Hammond’s experience can be persuaded to stay and coach in New Zealand the code would receive a proportion of the assistance that it sorely needs- from its former Kiwis.
