Our Smokey Strong Prospect For Nelson

Our Smokey, an acceptor for two races at Nelson today, might begin his campaign there by winning the Murchison Handicap, first leg of the Nelson Trotting Club’s on-course double.

An Our Smokey victory probably would be a popular result for course patrons as he is almost certain to be the popular fancy.

for the Murchison Handicap. But he was reinstated when Sweet Secret, which probably would have been his strongest form rival, dropped out of the field.

Our Smokey has been the runner-up in his two latest races. He was run down by Thurber Direct—which has won again since—at Washdyke last Saturday week. In the corresponding event at Hororata last Saturday he was narrowly beaten by Dryden Pal, but was well clear of the rest.

trials held at Addington on Tuesday, might be the hardest for the likely favourite to beat. Rhonda, which was soundly beaten at Hororata last Saturday but was placed at her two previous starts, might be the hardest to beat in the Brightwater Handicap, second leg of the course double. Rhonda will start from 36 yards. The Trentham-trained Scottish Piper, which is on the same mark, and Awayugo and Fair Play, both off the limit, seem the most likely to make Rhonda work hard for victory.
