Survey Of Women Shareholders
"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Jan. 28. The enigma of the woman shareholder in New Zealand will be clarified with the forthcoming publication of a book called “Who Finances New Zealand Companies?” Until now, the number of women holding shares in New Zealand has been a matter of surmise, and no figures have been available. Recently, the New York Stock Exchange published a report showing that 51 per cent of American shareholders are women. Now the strength of the grip New Zealand women have on the nation’s wallet will be revealed by a study undertaken by associateProfessor M. F. Lloyd-Prich-ard. department of economics, University of Auckland, and Mr J. B. Tabb, senior lec-
turer In the accountancy department of the university, at present Studying for a Ph.D. in England. The book will contain results of a study of sources of Auckland funds from 1940 to 1960, take-over bids involving Auckland companies between 1951 and 1962, and the percentage of women shareholders in Auckland listed companies. Research for the book has not quite been completed. Dr. Lloyd Prichard said that until the results of research were evaluated, it would not be known whether the greater numbers of women’s names appearing on the share lists was because the women had become more venturesome or because more had inherited shares- from their husbands. The research has covered 76 New Zealand companies based in Auckland and involving about £146 million of shareholders’ capital.
