DANGER ON RUAPEHU

Acid In Crater Lake

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 28. Acid content in Crater Lake, Ruapehu, has reached a level that would be dangerous to the human body. A warning was issued today by officials of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research that climbers should not venture into the water.

They said tests of water samples just made showed an increase in the proportions of hydrochloric acid and chloride in the water that would be disastrous to the human. A trap was created' because six to nine inches of clear water covered the lake. It was apparently not mixing with the water below, and did not contain the heat and acid of the water underneath.

Mr J. Clacy, one of the department’s geophysicists at the Chateau, said there was no indication that the dangerous acidity of the water would decrease. It had been rising for some time. A close check was being kept and more tests would be made next week.
