Homes For The Aged
Sir,—Much has been said about the many homes for the aged in Christchurch, but nothing about the difficulty of admission. All these homes and cottages have long waiting lists and there are many old people struggling with large houses and gardens to preserve their value. These people are barred from getting a pensioners’ cottage because they own a home and only 70 of these cottages were built last year. There are plenty of flats being built by private builders, many of them twostorey buildings allowed by the City Council which have ruined the value of neighbouring properties. I think it is time the City Council helped many of these people to obtain
a pensioners’ cottage in the district they live in.—Yours, etc., X.Y.Z. January 28, 1966.
