Record, Best Mark And Keen Juniper

A Canterbury record, and another Canterbury best mark highlighted the early events in the provincial decathlon and women’s pentathlon championships at Rugby Park last evening.

Miss B. Poulsen (Technical) bettered with a time of 12.1 sec. sec for the under-17 80 metres hurdles her own record of 12.3

In the same event, the 14-year-old Miss L. Johns, also of Technical, bettered Miss Poulsen’s under 15 record of 13.3 sec by .2sec, but no record can be claimed as the mark was set in an under 17 event. But the evening belongs to the tall Technical highjumper. W. Speirs. As the other competitors fell out, the last at sft s)in, and the night closed in. Speirs jumped higher and higher with his beautifully smooth action. Keeping out the chill easterly by resting in a sleeping bag between jumps, Speirs took the bar to the very top of the uprights, faltering only once, with his first jump at 6ft 3in.

“He's just doing this to make us bring out the pole vault standards,” said Miss V. I. Young, herself once a highjumper of some ability. But the pole vault standards were not required. Final Jump

He had the bar moved to 6ft 4in and missed his first two jumps, once narrowly, once clearly. Then, in almost

total darkness, he soared up in his final jump. The trailing leg touched the bar and bar and Speirs came down together. Speirs’s jumping has given him a handy lead in the open decathlon and because of his persistency Mr E. Lunn had to hold a small torch to identify the 400 metres runners as they finished in the last event of the ‘Twilight” meeting at 8.50 p.m. the women’s pentathlon is in a very interesting position. Mrs L. Wilson scoring 2621 points and Misses L. Curtis and D. Charteris together on 2584. Results: — DECATHLON Open
