Top-Seed Fairlie Eliminated

The top New Zealand junior, B. Fairlie, was eliminated from the Australian junior boys’ singles tennis championships yesterday in a quarter-final by an unseeded New South Wales player, K. Coombes.
Coombes beat Fairlie, who was top seed for the championship, 2-6. 6-4. 6-4. Fairhe started brilliantly, breaking Coombe's first two services and going to a 4-0 lead in the first set. He completely outplayed the Australian, frequently aceing him with a fast and spinning service. His baseline volleys left Coombes standing flat-footed.
Whereas Fairlie held most of his own services to love in the first set Coombes was in variably taken to deuce, 'combes appeared to settle down in the second set and after holding his own service in the first game broke Fairlie in the next.
But Fairlie broke through again in the third game and] after being down 0-40 on his own service in the next he; ■managed to scramble through ’o win and level the games at two-all.
Services were held until the tenth game when Fairlie. giving two set points at 15-40, was well beaten in a baseline volley. Coombes took the second set 6-4 and started the third with a service break in the [third game. Both players dropped service twice in the final set but Coombes managed to get the w inning break for the match in the tenth game.
Men’s Doubles.—Semi-finals: J. Newcombe and A. Roche beat J. Cottrill and R. Ruffles. 6-4, 9-7. 12-10: R. Emerson and F. Stolle beat W. Bowery and O. Davidson. 7-9. 6-4. 6-4. 6-2. Women’s Doubles.—Semi final: Miss N. Richey and Mrs C. Graebner (U.S.) beat Miss J. Tegart and Miss R. Ebbern. S-6, 6-1
Junior Boys’ Singles—Quarterfinal: K. Coombes (Aust.) beat B. Fairiie (N.Z.). 2-6, 6-4. 6-4. Junior Mixed Doubles.— Quarterfinal. I. Pomerenke and Miss J. Wicks (Aust.) beat O. Parun and Miss Beverley Vercoe. 7-5. 7-9. 6-2.
