r FHIS time it is the Halswell ; A landscape that is changing. These two English steel silos ; have been erected on the I Landsdowne valley property | of Mr John Harris, near I Halswell. Three similar silos — two large and one small I have already been erected on 1 the Ahuriri property of Mr D. P. Graham at Tai Tapu. Mr Harris’s silos will be used in conjunction with a I winter cattle fattening unit in which it is hoped to bring at 'least 150 cattle to chiller
weighfc at about 500 to 5501 b (dressed weights) in four months. The big silo will hold haylage, including lucerne, grass and possibly maize and the smaller silo will hold 90 tons of barley. Mr Harris speaks about the versatility of .these silos. Although he is going to use them in conjunction with cattle fattening, he says that they could be used to support a town milk supply dairy herd just as well.
