KID SKIN SHORTAGE Effect On Shoe Manufacture New Zealand production of women’s high fashion footwear was affected by a world-wide shortage of kid skins, said the managing director of McLean Footwear, Ltd. (Mr J. H. McLean) in Christchurch. New Zealand manufacturers also found difficulty in acquiring sufficient licences to import both glace kid and kid suede leathers. Mr McLean said that New Zealand had no goat farms for the production of kid. There was really only one tanner in New Zealand, who was capable of giving manufacturers of high-fashion women’s shoes the finished skin from the pelt. Pelts were imported in a pickled condition for processing in New Zealand. If New Zealand was not to import any more kid, its tannery would not meet the country’s requirements, said Mr McLean.
