Top Seeded Girl Beaten In Junior Semi-Final

The number one seed in the girls under-17 singles, Miss J. Bishop, of Canterbury, was defeated yesterday in straight sets by the third seeded Miss C. Bray, of Auckland, in the biggest upset so far of the Canterbury junior lawn tennis championships.

Tennis of a high standard was produced in the quarter and semi-final matches played, but this game provided a good protion of the poor tennis seen. Miss Bishop began well and broke Miss Bray's service twice to lead 4-0 in the first set. But her service weakened, her backhand began to falter, and Miss Bray lifted her game. She consistently broke Miss Bishop’s service and, although she lost her own service several times again, she won 7-5. 6-2. in a game noteworthy for long rallies rather than any attempt by either player to take the initiative. But Miss Bray consistently hit a lower, deeper ball. Three-Set Struggle In the other semi-final, Miss R. Legge, of Canterbury, seeded fourth, upset Miss G. Smith, second seed, in a long threeset marathon, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6. Both players attacked the net and provided some good tennis. The under-17 boys’ singles final will be an all Wellington affair. D. A. Parun defeated L. Sherwin (Canterbury), 8-6, 3- 6-3. in a match of fierce stroke-play, while R. Rae beat A. Guise (Auckland), 4-6, 8-6, 6-3. Rae was unseeded and Guise was the third Auckland seeded player he defeated on his way to the final. Southlander Lucky The unseeded B. McDowell (Southland) deserved to enter the final of the under-15 boys’ singles, but he was a little lucky. He defeated the top seeded A. Maxey (Wellington), 4- 6-4, 6-4, in a tremendous quarter-final which had good volleying and smashing, but in which his retrieving was decisive. His semi-final opponent, C. Greendale (Auckland), had to wthdraw with a strained Achilles tendon. The Southland contingent of 75 players has made its mark on the tournament and has contributed nearly all the players in the under-13 finals. Australian Finalist R. Durham from Victoria. Australia, is the only Australian to enter a final. He defeated G. Collins (Southland), 6-3. 6-1, in their semi-final and looks capable of fully extending L. Smith (Southland) in the final. One noteworthy feature of the tournament so far has been the justification by leading players of the seedings given them. The only exception to this has been in the boys’ under-17 sections where such players as R. Rae (Wellington), R. Colello (Nelson), A. Wrijght (Nelson) and T. Kelsey (Wellington) have shown a clear superiority over most of the seeded players. Today’s Finalists The following players will meet in the finals to be held today:— Under IS.—Boys’ singles: W.
