Station, Evacuated But Show Went On
(.Yew Zealand Preaa Association)
AUCKLAND, January 21.
A bomb hoax caused the evacuation of Broadcasting House in Durham street, Auckland, early this evening but the ingenuity of technicians, announcers and staff ensured that programmes from the four Auckland stations continued without interruption.
Thousands of radio listeners heard their favourite programmes unaware of the drama behind the presentation. After receiving an anonymous telephone warning just before 6 p.m. to the effect that a bomb would explode at 7.30 p.m., the broadcasting staff hurriedly pre-recorded a tape for one programme while another tape was rushed
to the transmitter at Henderson. “The whole operation went without a hitch.” said the district manager for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. Mr J. W. Proudfoot. “All the programmes went according to schedule.” Between the warning and 7.30 p.m., the staff taped 40 minutes of the programme for station IYD and switched it on just, before they left i the building. A 8.8. C. play to be broadcast from IVC
was transmitted from Henderson.
Station IZB was broadcasting from Queen street and was not affected, nor was Station IYA which was on a national link. The television programme from the studios in Shortland street was not affected. Police searched the building but found nothing.
