OXFORD BECOMES LESS EXCLUSIVE
• Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, January 21.
The number of Oxford students from State and direct-grant grammar schools has exceeded those from public schools for the first time, according to the university’s student newspaper, “Cherwell.”
A survey published in the paper shows that only 47 per cent are from public schools. In a similar survey in 1961, 52.3 per cent were from such schools. The move towards admitting more State schoolboys is most prevalent in the colleges which have been regarded as the stronghold for the rich and privileged.
Five years ago only nine Oxford colleges had more students from State schools. Now there are 15. One college has gone against the trend and has 2 per cent more public schoolboys. Many State schools have admitted that they are still put off by Oxford’s image.
