New Zealand Taking 34 U.S. Field Scholars

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. New Zealand was taking a record number of American Field Service scholars this year, and more Americans than any country involved in the high school programme except the United States itself, Mr A. S. Helm, chairman of the New Zealand American Field Service international scholarships said in Wellington today. Thirty-four high school students would arrive at Auckland on the Air New Zealand flight from Los Angeles on Sunday. Twelve boys and 22 girls were in the party; 24 of them would be placed in the North Island and 10 in the South Island. The students would stay with host families who had volunteered to accept them into their homes for a year as part of the family. They would attend local high schools. The aim was to give the students insight into and understanding of the New Zealand way of life, Mr Helm said. At present 51 New Zealanders are staying with American families for a year and studying at American high schools, and there was a strong possibility that this re-

cord figure would be exceeded in the coming year, Mr Helm said. Because of the calibre of the students who had gone from New Zealand the number had grown from one a year 15 years ago, he said.
