New Image For Contest Hoped For
The Christchurch Junior Chamber hopes to create a new public image for the “Miss Canterbury” contest this year. The chamber holds rights to the contest for the next five years.
“The American Junior Chamber organises the ‘Miss America’ contest, and it is one of their best fund-raising projects,” Mr J. Stewart, convener of the contest, said yesterday. Proceeds from the contest, which will be held on March 8, will go to the Medical Research Foundation. Last year a large sum was given to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. “We want to get plenty of entrants, for we need 10 semifinalists,” Mr Stewart said. “Once a girl becomes ‘Miss Canterbury’ success in a modelling career seems assured.”
A gala evening for the final judging at the Winter Garden is planned. The latest autumn, winter and evening fashions from Beath and Company will be modelled by professional mannequins before the contest. Entrants will model bathing costumes, street wear, and evening gowns. Mrs Peggy Johnson will
compere the contest, which will be judged by a panel of five. The girls will be interviewed individually about their interests and hobbies by a Christchurch personality. The evening will end with a wine and cheese supper to which all guests will be invited. Tickets may be bought from the Junior Chamber office. Entries for the contest close on February 25.
