Mr Eyre Expected To Go To Defence Meeting
fN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 6. The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) is expected to represent New Zealand in talks in Canberra late this month with the British Defence Secretary (Mr Healey). Earlier it was reported from | London that the talks would aim at closer Far East defence links among Britain, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. The talks are said to have a vital bearing on British defence policy in the Far East during the next 20 years. London officials said Mr Healey hoped to visit Malaysia and Singapore on his return journey to London. Discussion there would concern Britain's full support to Malaysia in the face of Indonesia’s “confrontation” policy. Mr Healey’s visit to Canberra will come after discussions in Washington between the British Prime Minister
(Mr Wilson) and President Johnson.
“The Governments mentioned, all being interested in the Far East, have been keeping one another continuously informed of their thinking on (the security problems of the region,” the Australian Prime ■Minister (Sir Robert Menzies) i said yesterday.
