RACING Vivien Robe Fancied For Kumara Win

Vivien Robe and Debbie Marie are in form to carry off a top-weights’ and stablemates’ T.A.B. double at Kumara tomorrow.

Vivien Robe is in the first leg, the Kumara Handicap, and Debbie Marie will run against the back sprinters in the Gilbert Memorial.

The successful Rjccarton jockey, E. G. Low, will ride both members of J. Lalor’s Reefton team. The Low-Vivien Robe combination carried off the corresponding race of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s double, the Publicans’ Handicap, last week. Vivien Robe showed ability and doggedness in wearing down the tearaway Carester at the end of six furlongs, run in very fast time—lmin 10 3-ssec. On the same programme, Debbie Marie ran Mister Bud to a neck over six furlongs in the Pentlow Intermediate Handicap. Kumara has had rain this week, and unless there is good drying in the next 24 hours the track could be heavy. Under those conditions Wester should be one of Vivien Robe’s strongest rivals.

Any drying in the track will help General Gilbert, winner of this race last year, and a close second behind Chatsgay at Oamaru on Monday and in the Kurow Cup on Tuesday. Four starts back, General Gilbert was third behind Carester and Vivien Robe over seven furlongs at the Hororata meeting. Totara Lad, the Greymouth Cup winner at his latest start; Rae’s Hope, which was placed as a sprinter on the second day at Omoto; and Clipper, a consistent stablemate of Vivien Robe, are

other West Coast horses equal to playing dominating roles. A change to soft or heavy ground could bring Morris Francis in for strong backing—backing that would be I justified in the light of his | form on winter tracks as a miler.
