Coxon Leads In Record 66
(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, Jan. 6. The defending champion, the New South Wales professional, B. J. Coxon, recorded a seven under par 66 to lead the field after the first day’s play in the New Zealand professional golf championship at Mount Maunganui. Coxon recorded seven birdies in his record-breaking round, which bettered the old mark by two strokes. Coxon leads the Lochiel professional, F. Buckler, by two strokes. D. K. Boone, of Rotorua, and R. D. Gillespie, of Remuera, lead the amateur section on 70.
The unattached professional, G. Q. Attril, also returned a 70 to share the third lowest score one stroke ahead of the New South Wales open champion, C. McGregor. Heavy rain delayed the start of the championship an hour today but soaked greens did not seem to affect the play of the leading entrants. The second round will be played tomorrow. W. Dunk, of New South Wales, was one of the few professionals to withdraw from the tournament. Another New South Wales player, R. Stanton, also withdrew. Two professionals whose entry had been doubtful be-
cause of injuries are playing in the tournament. G. B. Wolstenholme, of Britain, who broke a finger recently, went out for a practice round yesterday and found that by changing his grip he could play satisfactorily. A motor-buggy has been provided for M. Roesink, of Holland, who recently gashed his foot badly. The unattached professional, T. Brady, was another last-minute withdrawal. It is believed that he has just gained a professional appointment in Australia. The professionals who with-
drew were replaced by amateur players. The entry in the tournament, which is sponsored by Mount Maunganui and Tauranga stevedores, is 43 professionals and 29 amateurs. One round will be played today, one tomorrow and the final two on Saturday. Results (• denotes professional). 66: *B. J. Coxon (N.S.W.). 68: *F. X. Buckler (Lochiel). 70: *G. Q.
