Youths Arrested After Battle With Police
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. In an effort to arrest the ringleaders of a disturbance on the riverbank at Silverstream, last night, police, assisted by traffic officers, found themselves battling with a group of about 30 yelling youths and girls. As a result, seven youths appeared before Mr J. F. Keane, S.M., today. Three. Murray loata, aged 17, Ronald Ernest Hiley, aged 20, and Norman Colin McKenzie, aged 18, pleaded guilty to several charges and were convicted and remanded till January 13 for sentence. Pleas of not guilty were made by John Patrick Maher,
aged 20, Ronald Edwin Davies, aged 18 and Robert Bctu loata, aged 17. all of whom were remanded till January 26. They were released on bail of £lOO in their own recognisance and one surety of £lOO. Sergeant P. T. Killen said th;-t at 11.30 p.m. when a constable visited the riverbank area there was a large fire burning and a group of about 30 youths and girls were sitting around drinking from kegs and bottles. They were warned to put out the fire, as the area was in a closed fire area. The group then began hurling abuse at the eonstab'e and he had to call for assist--14 ice
