Shark At Howick
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Jan. 6. An Bft shark swam within a few feet of a man who was surf-casting off Mellons Bay this afternoon. Mr P. McCarthy, aged 64, of 166 Mellons Bay road, Howick, was standing knee deep in the sea ’ about 100 yards from the shore when he saw the shark. “First I saw this huge tail,” he said, “and my heart stopped. “I just stood there stunned while this huge creature swam closer and closer to me. It must have been eight
feet long and it was so close I could have touched it with ■ my rod. “I wondered whether to j poke it in the eye with my; rod or to run away. “Finally I decided to back away quietly as it swam past. Eventually it just swam away.” Mr McCarthy raced for the shore and warned swimmers. He said the shark, which looked like a grey nurse, was the first he had seen or heard of in more than 20 years of fishing at Mellons Bay.
