REPORTS ON SHELLING
Denial Battery Responsible (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The Chief of the General Staff, Major-General W. S. McKinnon, after examining reports from Saigon on the allegation that fire from the New Zealand battery had caused casualties among American infantry, said today that when the incident occurred, the battery carried out immediate checks. These established that it was most unlikely that the New Zealand artillery was in any way responsible for the casualties. “The battery is by now a very experienced and skilful unit and has established a reputation for accuracy which is second to none in the theatre.” General McKinnon said.
It was possible during periods of intensive operations for enemy fire to be confused with our own and the reports from Saigon indicated that Viet Cong mortar fire could have caused the casualties.
