(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. Wanganui’s television price war will end at 9 p.m. on Friday after more than three weeks of cutthroat competition by three retailers who sold hundreds of sets a*t prices marked down £6O and more. Two of the retailers, Messrs D. I. Carran and A. Smith had sold their stocks by Christmas Eve and have since resumed normal prices.
The other, Mr 11. Chainey, has also now nearly exhausted his supply of sets.
Yesterday Mr Chainey sold about 40 sets after his shop reopened from the New Year break. He will revert to normal trading after the latenight shopping on Friday The price war occurred when television sales were slumping throughout the country. It attracted buyers from
as far afield as Auckland, Hamilton and Hawke’s Bay. One or two orders were received from the South Island.
Mr Smith said the only reason he went back to normal business was difficulty in bulk buying.
“We eould have kept on, but that would have meant committing our supply for months ahead.” he said. “As it is, we still have a lot of orders to fulfill.”
