Yesterday’s Gallops

"The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Kandy, a local hope, and Lucky Son, a visitor from Levin and the winner last year, showed fitness for the Auckland Cup when they galloped impressively at Takanini yesterday morning. Kandy (Andrews) galloped boldly over a mile and a quarter. running the first five with Straddle (Mudford) and the last five with Prose (Kennedy). Kandy ran the distance in 2min 15sec. the last mile in lmin 48 2-ssec. the last five furlongs in lmin 7 4-ssec and the last three strongly in 41 3-ssec. Lucky Son (W. D. Skelton), which worked late when the track had dried out consider ably, ran comfortably over six furlongs in lmin ISsec. the last three, well off the fence, in 39sec. He could not have accomplished his task more easily. Unpainted (R. J. Skelton) led Teuira (Wyatt) over half a mile in a smart 48 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Unpainted is an acceptor for the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the Midsummer Handicap butcher owner trainer, Mr C. M. Taylor said yesterday she would contest the latter. Valiant Rebel (Cotter), which could be Prince d'Amour's toughest rival in the Foal Stakes, was too good for his stablemate. Fine Spirit (Wyatt), beating him by six lengths over half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Honourable (Wyatt) began slowly from the nine furlongs, quickening over the last mile in lmin 46 4-ssec, the last five in lmin 4sec and the three in Kamikaze (Cotter) and Ravenwood (Holland), with the outside running, completed a mile in lmin 49 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. Ravenwood was about half a length in front at the post. Otaki Royal Duty was extremely impressive when he ran three furlongs on the course proper at Otaki yesterday. The going was fast. Roval Duty and Point Duty ran three furlongs in 36 l-ssec. They were together at the finish. Both will race at Marton; Point Duty in the maiden event and Royal Duty, which was to have been kept for Trentham, in the open sprint. Trentham Vogel Bloem recorded an outstanding final trial for the Wairarapa Cup when he ran seven furlongs in lmin 27 4-ssec, at Trentham yesterday. On the trial grass, which had the sting out of it, Vogel Bloem carried a light-weight and had a following wind. He ran the first three furlongs in 36|sec, and the first four in 49$sec. He was still going well, although not as fast, into the wind at the end of the last three furlongs in 38|sec. Gold Ruth ran the last four of five furlongs in 51 2-ssec, and the last three in 37 2-ssec. Woodville The highlight of yesterday’s track work at Woodville was a smart run over six furlongs by Fascinate in preparation for tomorrow’s Wairarapa Cup. She ran the distance in lmin 16sec, 35 feet out on the course proper. Her final half-mile took 52sec, and the final three furlongs 39sec. Sail Away was no match for Fleeting Moment over a mile. Fleeting Moment drew almost a length clear at the line to take lmin 47sec for the distance, the last six in lmin 20sec, and the final three in 37sec. It was good work by Fleeting Moment, which had the worst of the weights. Sail Away’s week-end plans remain in doubt. Should he start at Hastings he will be ridden by H. N. Rauhihi, who will switch to Fleeting Moment in the event* of Sail Away racing at the Wairarapa meeting.

Awapuni Laramie left no doubts concerning his fitness for the Wairarapa Cup when he strode over five furlongs in lmin ssec on the plough at Awapuni yes-

terday. The final three took 38sec.

On the course proper Plantation worked convincingly over five furlongs alongside Pizzicato. They took lmin 7sec. the final three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Plantation is fit for Tauherenikau.
