Laramie Picked For Wairarapa Cup

"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. Manawatu form points to Laramie winning the Wairarapa Cup and Mukupai completing the T.A.B. double in the Wardell Handicap at Tauherenikau tomorrow. Laramie was a close and rather unlucky third in the Manawatu Cup and on the same day Mukupai lost by only a head after trying to lead all the way. Laramie’s jockey, R. A. Jenkins, considered him an unlucky runner in the Manawatu Cup in which he was half a neck and a nose from the winner, Bandon. A good final trial has kept Laramie in favour for Tauherenikau. Sail Away would have been fancied, but he was worked only moderately yesterday. His trainer, S. A. Brown, has a good record at Tauherenikau and Sail Away ran a sound race in the Manawatu Cup at his last start. If Laramie is to win the Wairarapa Cup, Rashid must be with him. He has had three starts in open company for three platings. Running out in the Manawatu Cup cost him at least as much ground as he cost Laramie. Fascinate has been out of luck at her last two starts. She looks well and is working well. Best of the Trentham quartet should be Gold Ruth, a previous Tauherenikau winner and apparently better now than she was in the Manawatu Cup. Vogel Bloem worked so well yesterday that it would not surprise to see him in the money. Mukupa went so weH at Awapunt al his third start for the season that he seems assured of favouritism for the Wardell Handicap. Two of his riva.s are the Awapuni horses. Plantation and Gymkhana. Plantation has not raced since his good win at Woodville and Gymkhana s second on Tuesday was a much improved effort. The best lightweight would be Kintyre. which pulled, choked and finished last in the Awapuni Stakes. Only one scratching is required to allow the Waiohine Stake* to be run as one race.
