Standout Picked To Win Waikouaiti Cup

. X® r !” at W1 have P rove d valuable if Solicitor, from Clinton, and the Riccarton stablemates Standout and Hushaway, are major contenders tomorrow in the Waikouaiti Cup.

Solicitor will be try- ' ing for his third successive win in the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s centennial meeting. Last Monday Solicitor was successful in the Dunedin Jockey Chib Handicap at Wingatui. That was his first race since he won over a middle distance at Invercargill in November. Standout and Hushaway—both members of J. C. Tomlinson's team—had one start each on their campaign at Wingatui. Standout ran soundly for - third to Royal Bid and Cassarook in the Dunedin Cup and Hushaway chased Warfare home in the open sprint last Tuesday. Standout has the better staying credentials, but Hushaway might manage a middle-distance much better now that he is settling further back in his fields and running his races out strongly. Cranbrook, the cup top-weight, ran surprisingly well for third among the open sprinters at Washdyke yesterday. That was his first real show of form since his second to Royal Bid over a middle distance at Motukarara In October. Cranbrook could be the strongest representative of South Canterbury stables. The Gore-trained Baalbek will strengthen the possibility of a victory for Southland, and Otago’s best could be the con Azir. There will also be solid backing for the Timaru Cup winner, Chatsgay, and Golden Vanity, winner of the St. Andrews High-weight at Washdyke yesterday. FLYING TRIX Flying Trix. the Gordons Gin Handicap winner at Washdyke on Tuesday, could be the best of a talented band of sprinters in the Toomey Memorial Handl cap. second leg of the main double. Because of that win Flying Trix is now the second top weight. She has 8-11, 21b less than Bold Venture, a durable veteran from Wingatui which lacks recent racing but invar tably runs best when fresh. Gladaub would come right in to favour if the ground eased, but Fairlane would need to im prove on her two weak runs at Washdyke. There will be solid backing for the speedy Carester. This Blenheim-trained mare lost first to Vivien Robe by a narrow margin in the President’s Handl cap at Washdyke yesterday. Status Symbol will be a strong hope for Riccarton stables. She came from far back to finish second to Flying Trix on the first day at Washdyke. Etoile Este, fourth in the open sprint on the first day at Washdyke. and Status Symbol’s stablemate, Sabell, which finished a close sixth in the same race when having his first race after a spell, could be the best of the others.
