STAFF FOR HOTELS

Students Given Jobs

More than 100 school teachers, training college students and university students were working as waitresses and housemaids in South Island tourist hotels, said the assistant secretary of the Canterbury Hotel Workers’ Union (Mr C. C. McCready) yesterday. This additional work force prevented any real staff shortage over the peak holiday period, he said. Mr McCready said he belives that “quite a few” Australian girls recently arrived at Wellington on the Oronsay. “No doubt some of these will turn up shortly,” he said. Temporary shortages of hotel staff sometimes occurred about the end of January when teachers began returning to their jobs, and later when the university students returned near the end of February.
