VENTURE AHEAD

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND.

Sailed by the 19-year-old skipper, D. Morgan, and the experienced forward hand, D. Dignam, the Sydney yacht Venture romped away with the first inter-Dominion 12-footer race on the Waitemata Harbour today. Miss Kowhai, sailed by the Auckland 14ft X class champion, D. Lidgard, stole a march on the fleet soon after the start and rounded the first mark the clear leader. She held her lead on the second leg, a run, but on the third, a reach. Venture mowed her down. Miss Kowhai finished second, 2min Msec behind Venture. The Auckland trials winner, Onyx (M. Patterson) was third, the Australian skiffs Aussie and Josephine were fourth and fifth. Generally, the Australian boats did better than the New Zealanders in the moderate but sometimes freshening south-west wind.
