Wellington Counter-Attacks

(N.Z. Press Association)

NAPIER.

Wellington showed the great strength of its batting when it recovered from being four for 70 with fine innings from B. W. Sinclair, A. E. Dick and the captain, D. O. Neely, to end the first day’s play of the Plunket Shield match against Central Districts at McLean Park, with 339 for seven.

The Central Districts attack was in control in the morning session on a true pitch but with Dick (60) and Sinclair (80) putting the innings into shape and Neely (not out 73) and L. C. Butler

(not out 28) giving the tail a healthy wag.

In the morning’s play the Central Districts attack had contained the Wellington batting with the wickets of B. A. G. Murray, G. P. Bilby and P. B. Truscott having fallen with the score at 41. P. T. Barton and Sinclair then set about consolidating the innings with Barton showing more aggression but failing to hook the ball properly when he had reached 18 and lobbing a catch to B. Yuile, at short mid-wicket. Sinclair, joined by the wicket-keeper, Dick, was still batting slowly, but together they took the score to 100 at lunch. Dick Scores Well After lunch Dick was scoring quickly, and soon passed Sinclair s score, showing particular power in his drives. Dick took the score to 168— a partnership of 98 runs with Sinclair, scored in two hours—before he caught an edge and B. Hampton, at first slip, took

a low catch. Dick had made 60, which included six fours. Sinclair, on 46, was joined by Neely, and Sinclair immediately began to show his masterv of the bowling by driving with superb power and precision. The Central Districts captain, M. E. Chapple, persevered with the attack of V. Poilard B Yuile. and himself, but’ the runs kept coming. The 200 took 251 minutes.

Chapple took the new ball at 211 and, as in the morning session, it was Collinge who was able to subdue the batsmen.

With the last ball before tea Sinclair was beaten bv Collinge for 80, with the score at 222 for six Sinclair's 80 had taken 227 minutes and included six fours and a five.

Neely was joined by H. A. Morgan. Together they added 63 in 68 minutes to take the score to 285 before Morgan was bowled by Yuile for 23. Neely brought up his halfcentury in 134 minutes with a mighty hook to the square leg boundary.

The Wellington 300 came up in 355 minutes, and the Central Districts fieldsmen, who had kept up to their task exceptionally well throughout the day, began to tire.

With their big hitting, E. C. Butler and Neely gave a pleasing finale to the day’s play by adding 50 runs in 37 minutes and taking the score to 339 for seven at stumps. WELLINGTON First Innings B. A.
