SHEFFIELD FROST
Potato Crops Blackened
Several hundred acres of potatoes in the Sheffield district are reported to have been blackened by frost on Wednesday night. The district is an important potato seed growing area. With digging still two to three months away, a grower said last evening that he expected the potatoes would recover, but there was likely to be a smaller yield. He said he had never known such a serious frost at this time of the year. It was rumoured that the frost was about eight degrees. It appeared that no crops in the district had escaped the frost. The plants, he said, were just coming out into flower. The top leaves of the more advanced plants had been blackened, but plants less advanced had been completely blackened. In home gardens, he said, beans and tomatoes had all been blackened.
