MARCOS TAKES OATH AS PRESIDENT

MANILA, Dec. 30.

A former guerrilla fighter, Ferdinand Marcos, aged 48, today took the oath of office as the sixth President of the Republic of the Philippines.

He assumed power from President Diosdado Macapagal.

The American Vice-Presi-dent (Mr Hubert Humphrey) headed the list of visitors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America.

President Marcos will face an awesome array of economic, political and foreign policy problems. His campaign pledges promised progress in all fields to “make this nation great again.” Also taking the oath was Vice - President Fernando Lopez, who is returning to a post to which he was elected

in 1949 under President El pidio Quirino.

Since then he has served in the Senate with Mr Marcos. The two were contenders for th presidential nomination of

the Nacionalista Party. The inauguration ended a year of the most bitter political campaigning and fighting in the Philippines history. Although Mr Marcos won by 650,000 votes, the VicePresidential race was so close it was not decided until two weeks ago. Since the November elections. there have been charges and counter charges of voting irregularities.
