FISHING TALKS

Announcement Tomorrow

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 29.

An official announcement on the Japanese-New Zealand discussions over the 12-mile exclusive fishing zone would be made before the Japanese left for home on Friday, said the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) tonight. The new zone, which the Japanese Government does not accept as valid under international law without the agreement of interested countries, will come into force at midnight on Friday. Mr Scott said the talks with the Japanese officials during the last week in Wellington had been held in a cordial atmosphere and an announcement of the result would be made before they left. General News i Not Too Deep The 27,632-ton P and OOrient cruise ship Oronsay was not “too deep” for Lyttelton harbour, the harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) said yesterday when commenting on a remark made by the captain of the Oronsay (Captain E. Cowan). Captain Cowan had said the vessel was “rather deep” for the port of Lyttelton. “We have had bigger ships than Oronsay in Lyttelton,” Captain Champion said. All Together It is expected that the entire fleet of the Holm company will be berthed together at Lyttelton this morning. The four vessels—the Holmburn, Holmdale, Holmbrae and Holmlea—will be doublebanked at the Gladstone Pier. Stray Duck An Upper Riccarton man found a possible New Year dinner on his front lawn early yesterday morning—a plump, Muscovy duck in fine feather. “I don’t know whether it came on the wing over the fence, or walked in my front gate,” the man said. Several telephone calls by the man’s wife to nearby poultry establishments failed to trace the duck’s ownership. Not one of them reported a duck missing. The duck had shown no disposition to leave the Upper Riccarton property by the time the man left for work yesterday, and had taken up , station on top of his compost heap.
