£15,000 FIRE

Hardware Store (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 29. Fire swept through a large section of Hughson’s Hardware Ltd’s bulk store in St. Aubyn street, New Plymouth, late this afternoon, causing damage estimated at £15,000. Firemen battled against dense smoke but they had the blaze under control in less than half an hour. 1 The blaze started in a section of the store used for keeping paint and inflammable liquids. It raced through other building materials stored on a mezzanine floor and spread to the building’s twostorey frontage before it was brought under control. A great pall of smoke billowed across the city—most of it coming from burning foam plastic, which was described by the chief fire officer, Mr I. C. Wesley, as “notorious for its rate of fire development." The building is a wholesale store. About half the stock was damaged by fire and much of the rest of it suffered water damage.
