OCEAN RACE LEADER

Stormvogel Nears Finish

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright; SYDNEY.

The big South African ketch, Stonnvogel, was less than 140 miles from the finishing line last evening in the 1965 Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. Stormvogel was making slow progress down the Tasmanian coast aided by a light easterly breeze. Further out to sea, and 54 miles back, was the New South Wales sloop, Balandra, followed by another New South Wales sloop, Freya. They were followed by the British entry, Fanfare, and the New South Wales sloop, Camelot

Officials of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania said Freya could still be holding a narrow lead on handicap from Balandra, Camelot and Cadence.

The New Zealand yachts, Tai rare, Carina and Cutty Sark, are virtually out of the running. Tairere, a 33ft sloop from Auckland, had about 230 miles to sail, and Carina, a 40ft ketch from Wellington was a further 20 miles behind Tairere.

Auckland’s 59ft cutter, Cutty Sark, was about 15 miles behind Carina.
