TALKS IN JAPAN
Humphrey On Tour
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, Dec. 29. The United States VicePresident, Hubert Humphrey appealed today to the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Elsaku Sato, for the help of Japan “or any other Government” to achieve peace in Vietnam, the Associated Press re-
ported. If Japan could achieve this, all humanity would appreciate its efforts, Mr Humphrey told the Japanese leader. Japan is the first stop on Mr Humphrey’s four-nation Asian tour. His party will depart today for Manila to attend the Philippine Presidential inauguration. The Japanese press has urged a full discussion of Vietnam where American policy, though supported officially by the Government, has been under a barrage of criticism from intellectuals, labour unions and the Left wing. Reuter said the Japanese were reluctant to support America in Vietnam.
