MANNING WAIKATO
First Party Selected
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 28.
The first contingent of officers and ratings for the crew of New Zealand’s new frigate Waikato, which is due here in 1967, would leave for Britain on Thursday. The party includes 10 ratings who will undertake technical courses before joining the Waikato as an element of the advance party. The men will join the ship for training and sea trials and will form the nucleus of the company that will bring it to New Zealand when completed.
Naval sources said the contingent will be flown to Britain in an R.N.Z.A.F. Hercules due to leave Auckland on Thursday afternoon. On the return journey the Hercules will fly to the United States from England carrying seven R.N.Z.A.F. airmen for training on the Orion aircraft ordered by New Zealand to replace the Sunderlands. The Hercules will load the second trio of Bell Sioux helicopters at Fort Worth, Texas, and deliver them to the R.N.Z.A.F. base, at Auckland on January 19.
