WELLINGTON, Dec. 28.
A life-saver rescued an unconscious member of a rival club from heavy surf at Titahi Bay this morning.
Raymond Trilford, aged 28, a member of the Maranui Surf Life-saving Club, was knocked unconscious by a runaway surf board about 75 yards from shore. George Tulloch, aged 20, of the Titahi Bay Surf Club, who had been knocked off the board by a 10ft wave, towed the unconscious man ashore. Mr Trilford was taken to hospital and after a gash in his head was dressed he was discharged. “There were only three people in the water at the time,” said Mr Tulloch. “It was pretty rough out there.
I was out on a belly board which someone had given to the club. I was wiped out by a huge wave and lost the board.
“Ray had caught a body shoot closer in, and he tried to duck when he saw the board coming down on him. “But it was not too easy to dodge a 101 b board with the force of a 10ft wave behind it.” There was a similar incident on Sunday when a woman swimmer was run down by a surf board and was taken to hospital with minor head injuries.
