Support For Museum At Leeston

Part of the recent centennial celebrations of Leeston Consolidated School was a remarkably good display of antiques lent by residents of the district. This was set up in a church hall opposite the school. Many people expressed the hope that the display would be retained as a permanent district museum. Support for the proposal was given by the Ellesmere County Council at its meeting last week, when a petition signed by Mr R. K. Bray and others was received. It described the extent of the display and the view that it could be added to considerably if an appeal were made. Members of the council spoke in favour of the idea and the council committed itself to supporting any action that the School Centennial Committee might take. One difficulty, it was pointed out, was that of finding a suitable building in which to house the museum.

Donations Made After giving further, consideration to a request for a donation to the appeal for financial support for the university halls of residence, the council decided to vote £lOO. The matter had been held over from a previous meeting to ascertain what other local bodies were doing. Although there was no opposition when the vote was taken, Cr. E. J. Stalker said that there was likely to be a similar appeal for Lincoln College in the near future and the council would be under an obligation to contribute. New ’Phone Exchange In reply to representations from the council concerning the provision of an automatic telephone exchange at Lincoln. Mr J. K. McAlpine, member for the district, sent a letter from the Postmaster-General (Mr Scott) in which the minister said that the department would do its best to provide

Demolition Order The council gave its support to a recommendation from its health inspector that a demolition order should be served on the occupier of a Lincoln milk bar. and decided to send a copy to the owner of the premises. The inspector mentioned that he had been engaged in a heated argument with the owner and lessee the previous day. The engineer (Mr P. MacI farlane) reported having had I2i miles of sealing done on 'Drain road in the Irwell ridi ing, from Branch Oram road to the Leeston-Dunsandel road, two miles in the Rakaia riding on Sharlands road from Main South road to Hunters road, and 130 chains in Springs riding on Waterholes road. Further kerbing and channelling had been done along the Hororata road at Dunsandel.
