LAUNCH IN STORM

R.N.Z.N.V.R. Training

The Taiaroa, the launch of the Otago division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, on its way to the annual sea exercises in the Marlborough Sounds, struck heavy seas yesterday and had to reduce speed to four knots.

Battened down against a strong south-westerly last night, the launch was expected to make port at Timaru or perhaps Oamani some 24 hours after it was due to rendezvous with H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, the Canterbury division’s launch, at Lyttelton. The officer in charge of the exercise, Commander R. F. Sanderson, commanding officer of the Canterbury division, said last evening that he had been in touch with the Taiaroa, which was having a most uncomfortable trip. The Pegasus was waiting at Lyttelton in the meantime, he said, and a decision would be made this morning whether it would proceed to the Sounds without the Taiaroa. The object of the exercise was to have as many craft as possible participating and it might well be that the Taiaroa would have to be left behind while the crew had a well-earned rest.
