N.Z. BOWLING TOURNAMENT OPENS IN CHRISTCHURCH

411 Survive Blustery Rounds Of Singles

Bowling form was more predictable than the weather on the first day of the national bowls singles championships which began in Christchurch yesterday.

The 1008 entrants had to contend with heat and humidity in the morning; blustery winds which swirled through the greens, several showers and some bursts of hail in the afternoon.

But by the end of a tiring day most of the leading contenders for the singles title were still alive.

The field has been reduced to 411 players—9s with two lives intact and 316 teetering on the brink with only one life.

In spite of the problems caused by the wind most players were very happy with the Christchurch greens which played fast and true. Auckland and Waikato bowlers who have had to contend with heavy greens lately were loud in their praise for the pace of the greens. Wind Was Problem The wind w’as the main problem encountered. On • many occasions balls travelling against the wind failed to run on, and with the wind often sailed past the kitty. M. R. Buchan (Tui Park), who is trying to become the first player ever to win three successive titles finished his four games with his two lives intact. But even for a player of his class it was a remarkable performance. A teacher, Buchan recently broke a finger in his right hand while taking part in a softball practice at school. The finger is still swollen and he has some difficulty and pain while bowling. The perpetually cigarsmoking, A. Govorko (Te Puke) was almost enveloped In a smoke screen as he struggled to keep his two lives: two of his matches he won with his last bowl. Decisive Defeat As expected, J. H. Rabone (Auckland) and C. D. Mc-

Garry (Carlton) kept their lives but N. R. D. Lash, Mc- - Garry’s partner in the pairs championship last year, dropped one game, and quite decisively when he was beaten, 21-8, by N. Larkins (Anderson’s Bay). A “dark horse” always appears in the first round and this time the position was filled by E. Bell (Burnside). Brought in at the last minute as a replacement, Bell, a young player, proceeded to win his four singles matches in a strong section. Another young player to

impress was A. Sinclair (Caversham). He beat the experienced N. McNab (Christchurch R.S.A.) by one point, 17-16, and his ruthless driving and skilful drawing should ensure him more success today. Bowls Rejected It was an unfortunate day for P. E. B. Jones, skip of the Otahuhu Railways four which is defending its title. His bowls were rejected by an

umpire at the Shirley green and he found playing with strange bowls, loaned to him by the same umpire, a heavy handicap against K. G. Murray (Opawa). Soon after he lost his second life. P. C. Skoglund. who won his first singles title at Christchurch in 1958. began impressively. He had a narrow, 17-16, win over M. K. Boon (Christ-

I church) but his other three | wins were by handsome margins, 24-7, 25-10, and 26-7. W. O'Neill (Carlton), whose main mission apparently is the (fours, lost a life when he was (beaten by C. K. Watt (St. Clair); while another favoured player. R. L. McDonald (Onehunga), after playing well in his first two rounds at Beck--1 enham, lost 16-17 to L. F. ! Evans. R. Lulham (Christchurch) (and J. Dale (Burwood) both had two lives intact, but I. Anticich (South Brighton), after beating a former pairs champion, S. W. Jolly, in the first round, crashed badly against R. Keen (Meadowbank). Two of New Zealand’s most prominent jockeys of former years, J. V. Sellars and W. J. Broughton, kept their places but Broughton lost a life in the second round. A. Connew, the greatly experienced Carlton player, remained with two lives and again showed good form. SECTION 1 First Round. —F. A. Morgan (West End, South Canterbury) 26, S. C. Riddell (Tainui) 7; A.
