ADELAIDE.

A record eighth-wicket stand by J. T. Murray and B. R. Knight changed the whole complexion of the match between the M.C.C. and South Australia at Adelaide yesterday.

Starting the day at 208 for four wickets in reply to South Australia’s 459 for seven declared, the M.C.C. suffered some early shocks.

At one stage during the morning the tourists needed 60 runs to avoid following on, with only three wickets left. But Murray and Knight quickly redeemed the position and put on 164 in two hours. The stand was a record for the eighth wicket by an English pair in Australia, beating the previous best of 137. by Maurice Leyland and

I George Geary for the M.C.C. i against Queensland in Bris--1 bane in 1928-29. Murray scored a chanceless 110 in 175 minutes and hit 11 fours. Knight’s 79 included seven boundaries. This pair helped the M.C.C. to reach 444—0n1y 15 behind the state side. Play had resumed yesterday in hot conditions, with a temperature reading of 95 degrees. This had jumped up to 99 by early afternoon. M. J. K. Smith, 94 not out at the close on Friday, reached his centurv after a bright start but at 108 he was caught by K. Cunningham off a full toss by D. Sincock.
