Six May Apply For 1972 Olympics

CS Z.r .4 -Reuter —Copyright) LONDON.

At least six countries are expected to apply to the International Olympic Committee for permission to hold the 1972 Olympic Games. Entries close on January 1. The decision of the Spanish Olympic Committee to put Madrid forward for the games adds a definite name to a list of “possibles,” which also includes Sydney., Munich, Budapest, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Detroit and Montreal. At one time or another in Ihe last year all these cities have expressed interest in staging the 1972 games. Paris and Vienna were also “in the running” at one stage, but have dropped out. The Austrian Government refused this month to supoori Vienna's candidature, and a bid by a Parisian council delegation to enlist government support for the French capital as the games venue was also unsuccessful.

Easy Win For Ellesmere Ellesmere proved too strong [for Banks Peninsula when it 'won their representative cricket match by 167 runs on the first innings yesterday. R. Brown and M. Barclay hit hard and often in Ellesmere’s first innings of 307 for nine declared and only the slow-medium bowler, D Masefield, was able to make any impression on the consistent Ellesmere batsmen. Ellesmere 307/9 declared (W. Scott 21. R. Brown 70. .1. Mever 42, M. Barclay 61, B Free 25, M. Moorhead 27: D Masefield 5/72). Banks Peninsula 140 (Paul Haglund 24, R Kay 28. D. Masefield 24, C Mackay 26: B. Free 2/29. M Barclav 2/6, A. Grayburn 4/30).
