Roof Blown Off Bach

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 27.

A family sleeping for the first time in its new bach at Piha, 27 miles from Auckland, had to flee in night attire when a freak storm blew off the roof and smashed in the plate-glass windows at 3.30 a.m. today.

A quarter-ton steel girder from the roof missed the man, Mr J. Paterson, of Titirangi. by inches as he woke to find rain pouring into the building.

The storm also forced several families to flee their tents and caused power breakdowns in areas from Piha to Helensville.

The peak of the storm, with

wind gusts of 70 miles an hour, lasted for 10 minutes, but heavy rain continued for several hours.

Mr Paterson said today: "It was a terrifying experience, and one 1 don’t want to live through again." The Patersons spent until dawn salvaging clothes and furniture and storing them in the garage.
