Annual Leithfield Gala Popular Picnic Outing

Many attractions combined to make the annual Leithfield gala a popular family picnic outing yesterday. A feature of the programme was the bathing beauty contest for those over 16. This was won by Miss Ruby Foley, who was then taken by car to Pines Beach for the final of the Miss Pegasus Bay contest later in the afternoon. The winner of the Miss Pegasus Bay competition will have . n expenses paid trip to the Miss New Zealand holiday resort beauty contest at Tauranga on January 3. In spite of a strong gusting wind for much of the afternoon gate takings at nearly £5O were up by about £lO on last year. These takings were augmented by a collection taken up by the bach holders and campers. Final figures from the many entertainments were not available yesterday, but in view of the improved attendance these are expected to be up also. As well, the organisers have arranged a series of nine dances on Saturdays and mid-week, starting last evening, until the end of January.

The varied programme included national dancing competitions. baby competitions, wood chops, displays by the North Canterbury Highland Pipe Band, and a display sheep dog work by Mr N. Briggs, Waipara. Rides on the Amberley fire engine, stationed at the beach, were popular with the youngsters for whom there were also races and lolly scrambles. While a considerable portion of the funds will b • used by the Beach Gala Committee for further developments at the beach, other groups helping to organise the gala
