TIMARU, Dec. 26. A memorial to perpetuate the achievement of Richard Pearse will be erected at Tirnaru Airport early in the New Year.
Pearse made the world’s second flight in a powered aeroplane at Waitohi, near Temuka, on March 31, 1904. three months after the Wright Brothers’ flight at Kittyhawk, United States, on December 17 1903. The chairman of the Thnaru Airport Authority (Cr. C. R. Hervey) said the memorial would be a weathered quarry stone monolith about four or five feet high on the western side of the terminal building with a recessed bronze plaque bearing appropriate wording. On the top of the pillar would be a symbol of flight pointing in the direction of Waitohi.
Cr. Hervey said the Department of Internal Affairs had had been asked if the plaque could be unveiled by the Queen Mother on her arrival at the airport on April 22.
