UNLIKELY TO RACE AGAIN
Amura Breaks Down
“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND.
Amura, from which so much was expected at the Auckland Racing Club s summer carnival, broke down tragically near the end of a brilliant gallop at Takanini on Saturday. Her owner, Mr J. C. O’Brien said yesterday it seemed unlikely she would be able to race again. Amura was an early favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, the second leg of the TAB. double at Ellerslie today.
Ridden by N. B. Holland, her regular rider. Amura pulled up lame after running five furlongs on the inside of the No. 1 grass in 60sec, the fastest of the season. X-ray photographs have shown she broke the cannon bone in her off foreleg.
It was thought al first that Amura would have to be destroyed but Mr O'Brien is now hopeful she will be saved.
Te Matai, one of B. L. Hillis’ team and a prospect for the Robinson Handicap today, was another casualty at Takanini on Saturday.
After sprinting with Pops Choice, Te Matai was lame and X-ray photographs have since shown that he has badly injured a hind leg. There seems little chance he will race again.’
