RACING DUNEDIN FORM LIKELY GUIDE TO TRENTHAM

Early favouritism for the rich Wellington Cup next month might hinge on result of major races at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Cup meeting, which opens today.

Most of the South Island's top contenders for Wellington Cup honours this season will meet in the James Hazlett Cup, the second leg of the T.A.B. double at Wingatui today.

This £B5O race has attracted a field that is strong by any standards, though the majority of the runners have earned high ranking over longer distances than a mile. A measure of the strength of the Hazlett Gold Cup field is that four acceptors—Palisade, Royal Bid, Eiffel Tower, and Hushaway—have won major races at Trentham. Besides Castle Flight, Cassarook and Court Belle have shown at Riccarton and elsewhere that they are close to if not right In the top class. Palisade. Castle Flight, and Court Belle appear to hold the brightest chances, but Cassarook might be little if any inferior at the distance.

The first leg of today’s T.A.B. double is the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap.

Llanmai, a stablemate of Palisade, is the veteran of the field, but he has started his nine-year-old racing promis-

ingly, and should take beating if the track is firm. Tundra, a last-start winner as a sprinter, is also capable at a middle distance. Llanman should find her the hardest to beat.

The best prospect in other races on the programme maybe the two-year-old Red Sash in the Champagne Stakes. If she gallops with full freedom—she was shin sore when she failed at Trentham in the spring—this swift Bellborough filly should keep her winning record on her home course intact 11.15 a.m.—
