Rare Shag Shot

(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 26.

One of the small colony of rare spotted shags at Bethel’s beach was shot on Christmas Day. The bird had been shot through the breast. The birds are totally protected and the constant interest of ornithologists, naturalists and photographers has accustomed them to humans as friendly visitors. “They are sitting shots for vandals.” said the president of the Auckland branch of the Forest and

Bird Protection Society (Mr W. R. McGregor) today. “It’s not sport. “The shags live in the pits and holes on Erangi beach at the northern end of the beach and photographers have so gained their confidence that people can walk right up to them.

“There were probably only 100 spotted shags on Erangi point “Most of the colony, one of only two in the North Island, is inaccessible,” he said.
