ADELAIDE.
The M.C.C. needs another 102 runs today to avoid a possible follow-on in its four-day match against South Australia.
At the close of the day’s play on Friday the tourists were 208 for four in reply to South Australia’s first innings total of 459 for seven declared. The 20-year-old State batsman, A. ShielL scored his first double century and the first against the present M.C.C. side on Friday. His 202 not out, made in five hours, with one six and 19 fours, enabled the South Australian captain, L. Flavell, to declare and turn his bowlers loose against a team which, after a week of insignificant one-day games looked ill prepared for the second test starting on Thursday. Century Partnership They so harassed the M.C.C. that the first four w-ickets went for 87, before M. J. K. Smith stopped the rot in a partnership of 121 with K. F. Barrington. South Australia on Fridayadded 165 off 170 balls. Shiell’s share of the free scoring was 123, mostly during an unfinished stand of 129 with *Y Sincock. They brought the innings to a climax by hitting 58 off 34 balls, including three sixes hit far to leg in one over from D. A Allen. Sincock hit two of these, but otherwise Shiell did nearly all the scoring. SOUTH AUSTRALIA First Innings L. Favell, c Alien, b Knight 40 L. Marks, c Parfitt, b Jones 0 I.
